The word "hacker"

For most people, "hacker" means a person who writes malicious code that breaks into your computer in order to steal information or just do damage. "hackers" are usually those who possess technical skills but use them in the wrong way.

In the tech community, 'hacker' has a very different connotation. 'hackers' are ninjas. 'hackers' are people who are well respected because they love solving problems and are able to solve problems in a way that nobody has previously thought of. Hackers are those who discover the hidden rules of a system. If the solution of a hacker is messy, complicated and hard to understand (though brilliant), it is called an ugly hack. If the solution is simple yet powerful, it is regarded as a great hack. For example, Calculus is an ugly hack. It is brilliant but messy. E=mc2 is a great hack. It is a very simple equation yet it is powerful enough to explain how the universe works.

Hacking doesn't just exist in the technology world. As long as there are systems, there are hidden rules. To make a hack, all you need to do is to understand the system ,uncover the hidden rules and use them to your advantage.

Happy hacking!

Tomorrow, one of my best childhood friend from Lashio is getting married. I was so surprised when I found out. Maybe because most of the people I hang out right now are so young that mentally I still think I am under 20. My friend's marriage just reminded me that I am actually old enough to get marry. These kinds of thoughts scare me. I feel like my life has just barely started. When I talked to my sister, she gave me an even bigger shock. She said she is probably going to get marry in the next year or so. I know she has a boyfriend. But marry? Are you kidding me?

I need to stop fooling around and seriously think about what I am going to do after Davidson. I think I will give myself 5 years before I think about marriage. So I think I should have a 5 year plan and work hard towards it when I still have freedom. (When you have a family, you won't have freedom to do whatever you want. There are many things you will have to take into account) You might want to ask if it is even possible to make a 5 year plan. How do I know what I want to do ? How do I know what opportunities will be presented to me? Though whatever plan or goals i make is likely to change, this is not an excuse for not planning ahead.

I need to get serious!

Just started my Dairy today. I have been wanting to do this for a while but procrastinated for various kinds of reasons. I will still keep this blog because sometimes I need an audience for my rambling thoughts . (Sharing is just in our nature, isn't it?) But I certainly won't publish on Facebook because i will feel like I don't have any privacy. I like my xanga blog mainly because it is obscure. There are several friends dropping by once in a while and the number is not too big for me to feel uncomfortable but it is not zero audience neither. But sometimes there are experiences, thoughts and emotions that i can only keep to myself. That's why I need my Dairy.

My senior year has been a very tough year so far. 5 courses (with one of them being my senior thesis), 10 hours of work-study, 5 hours of research assistant work and trying a publish a paper with me being the first author have been killing me. Health problems and my addiction to time-wasting activities just worsen the situation. The more stress, the less time, the more likely that i will spend hours watching a long drama or reading online novels or Manga. Then I have even more stress and less time and the circle repeats. I escape my reality by entering the worlds of "Naruto" or "sword-immortals"剑仙 or Proposal Daisakusen etc.

Now i need to get out of these worlds.

I read a blog with a good advice of setting up two computers. One is strictly for work and study and the other is for everything else. Because for example when we're watching television, we know that we're being unproductive but when we're using our computer, it can be hard to be aware of our unproductive behavior. Just think about it, how many times have you sit down in front a computer trying to write a paper but then you think ok i am gonna check my email real quick and then you go to facebook and then you go to your friend's suggested links and then you check your email again. Before you even notice, precious time has passed. And you're not as guilty for other activities like watching television or partying because sitting in front of a computer seems like you are working.

Having two computers helps to increase your awareness. When you are studying, you use one computer and you only study and do nothing else. And when you want to take a break, you use the other computer for other purposes.

This is a great idea. But unfortunately, i only have one laptop. Then I found this great application called RescueTime. Basically, it monitors all of your computer activities and give you alerts and statistics about your use of your computer. It automatically (but also let you) mark some web sites as being unproductive and you can see how much time you spend on unproductive applications or web pages. More importantly, it lets you block access to a list of unproductive webpages for 30 min or 1 hour or 5 hours etc. I am starting to use this software and hopefully it will make me more productive.

Now my question for whoever is reading this post. Have you ever had similar problems (using internet too much for unproductive or low priority activities; at least 2 unproductive hours per day or 14 unproductive hours online per week) ? What are your solutions or ideas to solve this problem?
